Compounds & Proprietary Formulations

Custom FDA and USP Compounding

Selecting the best sanitary & hygienic elastomer compounds for a high purity process where sanitary gaskets, O-rings and diaphragms are used is critical and can be challenging. Many customers are not aware that EPDM, Viton, Buna-N, Silicone, etc., are just general classes of base materials (resins) used in making seals and gaskets. No two EPDMs or Buna-N’s are the same.  There are literally hundreds of different resins in each class, and once a resin is chosen, it must be formulated with other materials into a compound with which to make a hygienic gasket and elastomers.

Each elastomer compound and the way it is manufactured into a part will result in a unique set of performance properties: physical properties (e.g. tensile strength, compression set), chemical resistance (e.g. to both process and cleaning materials), temperature range (high, low and cycling) and longevity once installed in the process.  Poor compounds are simply made to be inexpensive and will quickly degrade, contaminate the product, and add cost to the operator to clean up.  Good compounds will keep the process clean, predictable and reliable and will give years of service.

Newman’s compounds are expertly chosen, formulated and produced under our strict controls by an in-house chemist.  All Newman’s sanitary gaskets and other products are traceable to the batch of raw material used. Many of the compounds we use are proprietary and unique only to Newman.
